I created a post last year on the WCAG deadline, well April is here, what have you done to prepare your websites and pdfs to meet the accessibility requirements? As a designer, I’m working to meet the deadline on all three of my websites.
I created an accessibility toolkit that will be loaded on all my sites, which includes a dashboard that displays the following tabs:
Contrast checker My color palette has a passing color contrast ratio
Alt text generator I’m working on all the alt tags and I ditched the generator and recently developed my own WordPress Plugin to do an auto create of alt tags on all the images in my media folder. I may be biased but I think it’s the coolest thing ever
Heading hierarchy They all pass
WCAG quick ref This is a handy dandy tool that just reminds me of some basics
A couple of other things that I have done to build accessibility into my website. I created an accessibility policy page on all my sites telling my visitors that I’m actively working to improve accessibility and to reach out if you are visiting and find something inaccessible. I’m using the WAVE evaluation tool to review pages.
I still don’t have my downloadable PDFs clearing the Accessibility check, but I’m working on them. I’m just a bit frustrated with Adobe’s inability to build accessiblity tools into their products that are easier to understand. I recently discovered that I was able to bring my pdfs into Affinity and reorder the flow, and tag the images. It made the pdf process so much easier, but it's also a big lift and a huge speed bump in my workflow efficiency. Maybe I should work on a tool that will build accessibility into my PDFs.
Let’s talk about what everyone is doing and how we can help make sure we get our sites and content meeting the specifications.
